The Life's Work Clinic Intern Reading List

As you know by now, not all internships are created equal.  I mean, you could have gone to work in an agency or residential treatment center where the clinical staff pawned off all their group work onto you so that they didn’t have to do it any more…Or, you could have done the same thing over and over again while having your supervisor tell you what type of therapy you were going to do.

Since this is clearly not the type of person you are, let’s get right down to it.  This internship is designed to challenge you.  This internship is designed to get you to question what you think you know, because in private practice, you are always going to be challenged to see people and clinical work in new and innovative ways.  That is exactly what this required reading list is designed to assist you with.  It is ambitious if you do not usually read a lot, but, really, 7 books over 9 months should be within reach of most people.

These books are designed to address the mindset pieces as well as the clinical tools necessary to excel in private practice.  You are, after all, becoming a business person, and it will take determination and a commitment to self-improvement to succeed and grow.  I have chosen these books to help instill in you a mindset of continual growth, continual challenging of accepted “norms” and to give you the tools to exceed all the upper limits that you might run into over the coming years in your life and career.

We will be discussing these books as part of our regular, supervision meetings.  I am certain that once you dive into these books that you will want to share your discoveries, as these all had a significant impact on my life both as a person and as a clinician.

Of course, you can log your hours of reading as well since it will constitute a significant number of hours over the course of your internship.

I have included this list as a .pdf for your files.

Enjoy.
